Google’s 25% – Apple’s 80% – Why Being The Best Matters

The blogsareabuzzin about the reports that Google gets 25% of all online ad sales this year.

THEY DESERVE IT: Adsense is the best possible platform out there for getting targetted visitors to your Web site.

Why does Apple have an 80+% marketshare? The iPod is a great product. iTunes integration is solid. There is, simply, no easier way to aggregate Podcasts and sync them with a portable device. We even spent part of the book talking about an “iTunes as OS” strategy.

And yes, for those iPod users who don’t care about Podcasting, their music/television/movie/games integration options are pretty good too.

What is Google’s competition? Yahoo? Blechhhh.

What is Apple’s competition? Zune? Time will tell – but not looking good.

I spend good money on Google every month. Why? Because it works. It works well.  It makes me money.
And, I see good money from Google Adsense every month as well. Why? Because it works. It works well.

There are a stack of MP3 players on my desk. Which one will I take with me on my trip tomorrow? The iPod. Why? Because it is the best MP3 player on my desk.

Google and iPod both have the marketshare and mindshare. They are impossible to beat – at least at their own game.

Google’s next competitor is the company who invents a new, blue ocean, targetted search product that gives me something that Google doesn’t – not just gives me the same thing as Google – just at a cheaper price or different search engine.

iPod’s next competitor is the company who invents a new, blue ocean, portable media product that gives me something that Apple doesn’t – not just gives me the same thing as Apple – just at a cheaper price or different file format.

If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.

If you can beat them, do it right.
