iPhone 5 Announced.
Early in the game at the big Apple announcement this morning (less than 15 minutes into it), Apple announced their iPhone 5 – among other things, made entirely out of glass and aluminum.
Great coverage at – http://thenextweb.com/apple/2012/09/12/apple-introduces-iphone/ and http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/12/3320358/iphone-5-name-leak-apple-search-results
It's 20% lighter than the iPhone 4s, retina display (326 ppi), 4 inch display of 1136×640 (a 16:9 aspect ratio) and, according to the event, designed for the hand.
The new display allows for a 5th row of icons and the ability to "show more stuff."
What this means to app designers is still to be determined. Will there be 3 versions of apps (iPhone, iPhone 5, iPad)? Existing apps will simply run with borders – but that feels a little lame – don't it? Apple claims "easy updating of apps" – but of course they would.
They say the "display really looks better" – but of course they would.
On the wireless front, HSPA+, DC-HSDPA and LTE. Lots of carriers. Lots of carriers.
They've updated "every aspect of iPhone 5" – more to come …
